Cherry Blossoms

A few words from Brittany:
Justine and I have wanted to take cherry blossom photos for years now, but it just so happens that every year one of us is out of town and ruins the whole thing…and it doesn’t help that our blossoms last for only two short weeks either! We (Justine) found this awesome spot in one of the residential neighbourhoods lush with blossoms and I could not believe how fortunate we were to have the place to ourselves (a hidden gem if I ever saw one)! When I first shared these on Instagram I had so many messages asking where it was – but of course, by then, they had all already fallen.

From Brittany of Life Set Sail:
I’m not gonna lie, in an instant world where everyone wants a quick glimpse of something they can double tap on their phone, it’s kind of hard to stay motivated in putting together entire blog posts that people probably aren’t going to take the time to visit. That being said, I find that I am brought back to the whole reason I even started Life, Set Sail…for myself. If you ever wanted to start a blog, you’ve got to make sure you’re doing it for you first…I cannot stress this enough. Almost every photo on LSS is taken by a professional photographer. We travel, shoot from sunset to sunrise, send off film to get developed, wait around for it, make simple edits, put together a layout and THEN I still have to think of something clever or insightful to write about! And I’m not even going to get into the whole business side of things (pitching companies, negotiating rates etc.) It’s no picnic…but things are done this way because both my photographer and I are passionate about what we do and we want to make it as beautiful as possible! I love instagram as much as the next person, but I really hope that people will start looking for more than just a pretty image…I know I’m getting tired of it. More and more I want to seek out real blogs and be able to read something with actual substance.

Minnow Bathers

A few words from Brittany of Life Set Sail: You guys know I love supporting our Canadian designers and today I’m so excited to introduce you to Minnow Bathers, an independent swimwear label based in Toronto! Each piece of swimwear is handmade to order in studio with $1 of every item sold donated to the Ocean Conservancy. I’m obsessed with the high-waisted styles and the attention paid to both detail and comfort – I’m definitely one of those girls where looking good and feeling good go hand in hand. These photos were taken at sunset on the Oregon Coast. Not long after this shoot we lost our car rental keys in the ocean and (thank God), a kind stranger found them for us before all the light was gone and we were trapped in the middle of nowhere!

Portland Oregon with Life set Sail

From Brittany of Life Set Sail: We’re back! After spending a week travelling Portland and the Oregon Coast with Justine, I’m so SO excited to share all that we did. It was a whirlwind trip and a lot went wrong (it’s okay we can laugh about it now), but we saw a lot and (of course) took a lot of photos…
This outfit (head to toe Aritzia) is probably my favourite from the entire trip. I’m basically obsessed with every piece here – oh, and those sunglasses are only $15 from Nordstrom  (shop here). I think this is the first time I’ve ever showed you guys my new(ish) purse too, major splurge (and my first ever designer bag), but so worth it. Since Gucci changed designers they are actually discontinuing this bag, just a heads up for all the fashionably obsessed! Of course, in typical Brittany style, I’ve kept accessories at a minimal with my favourite Hart + Stone pieces. I actually got second piercings just for her earrings haha.
We found this Art Fills The Void mural online before our trip and, aside from all the wonderful beaches, it was the one I was most excited to shoot…I mean come on, it’s a GIANT BANANA! The original was painted back in 1982 making it Portland’s oldest community mural. It has recently been restored as of 2015 after years of graffiti and tagging by idiot out-of-towners that clearly did NOT respect the banana!

Fashion & Beauty Blogger Brittany Messner of Life Set Sail

A few words from Brittany: I’m not from Laguna (San Clemente actually), but my mom grew up in Laguna Beach and I have been back often with her over the years. The funny thing is that it reminds me a lot of the island in Canada we moved to when I was seven (Salt Spring) in that it is a very artistic community full of hippies, musicians, and that slow-paced lifestyle. Even the touristy side to it is quite charming.
Although I narrowly missed my alarm for sunrise the day we went down to Crescent Beach (okay I didn’t miss it, I forgot to set it), I’m still super thrilled with the way these photos turned out. We took so many that I’m actually breaking them up into three different posts…I guess that just shows how inspired we really were by this location! We spent a good couple of hours walking up and down a couple of the beaches just to make sure we didn’t miss anything!
When we wrapped up our shoot we had breakfast at one of my favourite places, Zinc Cafe & Market where we warmed up with coffee and laughed over our ridiculous escapades (fyi we stripped down and went skinny dipping for our last set of photos). After a good shower and nap back at the hotel we spent the rest of the afternoon hanging around Laguna before driving out to Palm Springs.
