From Stacey Foley…Natural, organic and ethereal weddings are becoming more and more popular so we wanted to create a shoot to inspire brides and allow them to find true beauty in something simple. The creative process started for me when I was contacted by Kelsey McIntyre of Kathryn Bass Bridal letting me know that she would be in Calgary for one day and had a trunk full of beauties available if I was interested. I jumped on the opportunity. Justine Milton, of Milton Photography, was the absolute perfect fit to capture it all. Her style is timeless, elegant and incredibly gorgeous.

I wanted to allow the colors and textures of the season to play a big part in the design and inspiration of this shoot so I incorporated red pears and pomegranates into the tablescape and Fleurish created for us the most stunning bouquet and centerpiece incorporating falls favourite flowers and fruits. Simple and beautiful stationery, created by Pink Umbrella Designs, was added as the perfect finishing touch.

Weddings are meant to be an expression of self, an incorporation of season and a beautiful look into what inspires the soul. This shoot was created to allow brides the opportunity to see that simple inspiration and beauty can come together to make pure magic!

DIY Hair Tutorial

As Seen On: Style Me Pretty

Scans By: Photovision Prints | Heat Protectant: Hot Toddy | Curling Iron: 1" Barrel
Salt Spray: Mai Tai Spritzer | Hairspray: Money Maker Flexible Hold | Sparkling Soda Shine Mist
Dry Bar | Lifestyle & Beauty Blogger Brittany Messner of Life Set Sail

A few words from Brittany Messner of Life Set Sail who has partnered with Drybar to bring you an easy how-to for one of this seasons hottest trends, exposed bobby pins.

There are so many ways to pull of this trend, but I’ll get into that later! For now you can follow the step-by-step guide on how to recreate the look above at home.

1. Part hair to side and apply a heat protectant. I used Hot Toddy, which is a lightweight heat and UV protectant.

2. Curl one inch sections of hair away from your face and allow to cool. For loose, tousled curls I love the 3 Day Bender 1″ Barrel Digital Curling Iron for it’s easy to use rotating barrel and fast heat up/cool down time.

3. Finger comb hair to break up curls.

4. Mist hair with salt spray. The Mai Tai Spritzer does a phenomenal job of creating added texture and volume…oh yah, and it smells incredible.

5. Pull back bang heavy side and pin. You can do this whichever way you like, but for this particular look I’ve gone for three X’s. If you want them even it’s easiest to pin each one side of each X first before crossing over with the other side.

6. Finish with a light-hold hairspray like the Money Maker Flexible Hold Hairspray to keep unwanted frizz at bay.

Optional: If you’d rather go for a smooth, less textured look you can skip the salt spray/hairspray and create a glossy finish with the Sparkling Soda Shine Mist.

Not into so many steps? This would be a perfect last minute style for back-to-school by skipping the curling iron – and don’t worry about getting the pins to sit evenly as this style looks great with random placing as well.

A few words from the magazine feature:
Rivers & Lakes - Emerald lakes and sweeping views of the Rockies - be inspired by the natural elements of Canmore Kananaskis.
Cool Blues - Light blue in a marbled water-inspired design is the perfect way to bring in the water elements of Alberta to your invites. Vintage stamps and calligraphy complete this look, and set the stage for an inviting day!
A Love Story - Stealing kisses in the woods - we are smitten with this bride and groom's look. A fitted grey suit adorned with a succulent boutoniere is dashing next to a stunning bride wearing a Tara Keely long sleeved Ivory Venise lace gown.
Mt. Engadine Lodge - Mount Engadine Lodge is a hidden getaway in the pristine Spray Valley Provincial Park. With it's rustic charm and natural beauty, it's the ideal location to be inspired by the rivers, lakes and soft green meadows.
Riverside - Wood tones and river rocks - this intimate setting by the river is the perfect place to enjoy all the beauty around you. We love the gold and copper accents paired with soft floral and candlelight. Twigs of eucalyptus on each place setting pulls a natural element to the table.

Outdoor Golf Course Wedding

A few words from Brea about the big day:  I woke up to lightning and pouring rain on the morning of our outdoor wedding and I was devastated because it was always my dream to get married outdoors and I did not want to do it in a tent. Eventually the rain stopped and the sun shone brightly and with the help of some of our wonderful family and friends we were able to set up in time for the wedding. We had a very personal ceremony on the island green at the golf course followed by our reception, which took place tucked away in the back of the driving range. It was really important to us that our guests felt comfortable and so we included favors such as sunglasses for the ceremony in the sun and blankets for late night at the reception and we also had several little areas at our reception that we called “conversation areas” which were benches and couches for groups to sit back and chat. One of our favorite moments from our reception was a video that our bridal party made including clips and well wishes from them and all our siblings, and to top it off they surprised us by including a video clip of my Grandmother (who has advanced dementia and was not able to be at the wedding) wishing us Congratulations. We finished the night with a poutine bar, which we highly recommend other couples consider as their late night snack because it was a favorite of our guests. We truly could not imagine a more perfect day and it was all because of our wonderful family, friends and vendors.

Softer Side of Bollywood

A softer side of Bollywood

We hoped to create a minimalist shoot that embodied a modern, effortless South Asian bride. A little bit of wind and a breathtaking bride were all the elements we needed as inspiration for this Bollywood inspired editorial. Most south Asian brides are accustomed to bold and brighter tones of deep red and pink tones when planning their weddings, but we wanted to showcase a softer,  more muted touch for the modern bride. I find so much beauty in simplicity and showcasing softer, neutral palettes. There is still an element of the bolder homage to the beautiful culture of the bride with her stunning jeweled Lazaro gown while the florals balance everything out. The beauty is truly in the movement of the bride as she is walking towards a new adventure in her life and how the wind delicately blows her saree, her hair and the stunning silk and willow ribbon in her bouquet.

The power of the written word

From Mana Abosaid of Birds & Honey: In a day and age where people are glued to their phones and computers, the art of the written word has slowly faded further and further away. I wanted to create something that showcased how beautiful this art still is. The art of letter writing is just as important today than it was hundreds of years ago as it reveals something about your personality that a machine can’t. Your style of handwriting, choice of ink and paper all say something about you as an individual. Handwritten love letters are more personal and meaningful, too. Just the thought of someone taking time out of their busy day to sit down and write onto paper the poetry of their heart is truly magical.

Epiphanie - Wedding Photography Workshop Engagement Session

Scans by: PhotoVision Prints | Flowers by: Akiko Floral Artistry | Hair & Makeup by Elizabeth: Blushed Beaute
Dress & Sweater from: Anthropologie | Styling by: Birds & Honey | Jewellery by: Kate Szabone

One part of the wedding photography workshop consisted of an engagement session. I had all the students watch how I would shoot it, then gave them all their own time with the models. There was a wonderful spot with perfect lighting just at the edge of the parking lot near the venue. Other than it being absolutely freezing cold it all worked out beautifully! The amazing models, Emily, also a make up artist for Blushed Beaute, and her boyfriend, Jay stuck it out in the cold for the whole time. I loved photographing these two, even though it was only for a few short minutes just to demonstrate some of my posing techniques. The styling fit right in with the coloring of the wedding & details styling, we kept the same blues color scheme & tried to choose an elegant & flowy, yet still warm, outfit for Emily, and of course a co-ordinating one for Jay!

We are thinking about hosting more workshops in the future, if you might be interested in learning from me, give me a shout and let me know! I’ve also started doing some one-on-one mentoring this year & I would love to chat with you about it!

From Mona: Being your own boss and working from your home is one of the greatest feelings in the world. You get to make your own hours, you can plan time ahead for special occasions/vacations and not get turned down  but there are some downsides to this as well. Sometimes you can get in a funk when it comes to structure and feel “not so glamorous” working in your sweatpants everyday. I never wanted to feel like a slob kabob so I made it my mission to design a space that not only made me happy but would make me show up to work looking my best.

Being a wedding planner and designer I am constantly surrounded by all things gorgeous 24/7 when it comes to my beautiful clients so I like to stay inspired for them even when I am working from home. I have always been drawn to soft pastel inspired colors so I wanted to make sure that my office was surrounded in those hues. I am also obsessed with any and every kind of fashion magazine so I dedicated an entire wall for my favorite magazine covers!
